Reading Engine Trouble Codes with Torque Pro for Android: OBD4Everyone Ep. 12
In this episode of OBD4Everyone, we will show you how to read engine trouble codes at using Torque Pro for Android.
We also briefly discuss pending faults, freeze frames, emission monitors, mode $06 data and why you should NOT clear the trouble codes.

Hi, I have a 2007 Ford F 150 with a 4.6 liter engine. I’ve been showing two misfire codes and Bank 1 rich codes. The misfire codes are for cylinders 2 and 3 which are both on bank one so that will explain the too rich code. I have done some work to it and the engine light has gone out but the codes still show in Torque Pro. I have driven it 275 miles since the codes were cleared. The engine light has come back on since I cleared the codes, I’ve worked on the truck and now it’s off. I don’t understand why it still shows codes with the engine light off. Here are the codes.

End of report.
Any information as to why the codes are showing but the engine light is off would be much appreciated. I want to get it inspected but I want to be sure it will pass.
Hi Jim,
Torque Pro doesn’t always interpret the ECU’s data accurately.
You might want to try OBD Fusion and run a diagnostic report to see what category the codes are in and if your car is ready for emission inspections or testing. (Here is what it looks like: https://youtu.be/ewNJDpWCKe4)
OBD Fusion’s diagnostic report will also show you the OBD Mode $06 misfire counters (by cylinder!!) which can be very helpful to troubleshoot.
There are three types of codes:
(1) Current – fault has been detected twice (or once if catalyst damaging like a misfire)
(2) Pending – fault has been detected once. At this point the check engine light is not on. If the fault is detected TWICE, the check engine light will be turned on.
(3) Permanent – fault has been detected BUT can only be cleared by the ECU after the required number of drive cycles without the fault reoccurring. (This doesn’t apply to your 2006 Ford)
If you have a trouble code, BUT don’t have a check engine light, I suspect it is a “Pending Code”. In most states or provinces, that will result in a FAIL, as the system has not proven it is 100 functional.
Here is what I think happened:
• A misfire happened
• Problem fixed and code cleared
• Problem was detected ONCE
• Check engine light is off, but code is pending.
If the ECU doesn’t detect a problem after the required drive cycles, the pending code will be erased.
Here is an EXCELLENT document from Ford on the 2007 OBD System Operations:
